An abridged version of the final report of the Norwegian pilot municipality project has now been translated into English and is available for downloading. The project itself, and in particular the methods employed, have generated widespread interest abroad.

The national universal design development project using pilot municipalities was carried out from 2005 to the end of 2008, and was administered under the auspices of the Ministry of the Environment. A total of 17 municipalities took part in a systematic effort to translate the principles of universal design into clearly defined actions and build local communities characterised by adequate accessibility, equality, participation and free choice for all
The final report of the project provides an overview of the activities carried out during the project. It describes how the efforts to apply universal design principles have been organised and tailored to the needs of urban and rural municipalities that differ widely in terms of their area, population and access to planning and building resources.
As word of the Norwegian project spread, the need for an English-language summary of the project emerged. The result, Universal design as a municipal strategy, is a 30-page abridged version of the original 104-page Norwegian report, and is available in electronic form only (pdf-format). The report provides some historical background, presents universal design efforts and concrete examples from each participating municipality, and summarises the shared experience gained under the project. Most of the participating municipalities have subsequently applied for, and been granted, new status as resource providers.
